La Caja Blanca is an independent art gallery and production space which specialises in the production of site-specific projects within the gallery space, site-specific projects in public spaces, and the publication of catalogues and artist books.

Many of our projects are produced in collaboration with the galleries which represent the artists, public institutions, and private collectors.

11.04.2015 - 06.2015

The show brings together a series of works sculptures, drawings on paper and a two channel video installation produced by the artists within the framework of La Caja Blanca's guest artist residency programme, which on this occasion has been supported by Creative Scotland.

Echoing Nietzsche's Ubermensch, The Overman is the protagonist in a collection of eerily familiar three-dimensional scenes, where the main characters appear to be suspended in an ominous state of pause; a split instant away from taking a nose-dive into a spiral of delirious, unhinged events.

Inspired by the aesthetics of popular Hollywood films and video-nasties from the 1980's and 1990's, and soaked in Glaswegian humour, the scenes presented by Littlewhitehead at La Caja Blanca, draw the visitor into an orgy of assaults on contemporary society's pretentious hypocrisy, submission to mass manipulation through mass culture, and its pathetic addiction to recreating itself through virtual identities

Noa Lidor's works include sculpture, installation and drawing. Her sculptures and installations incorporate bells that cannot ring; recorders that cannot be played; and Braille sentences spelt out in the dark in light beams from lamps. Often her works reflect ordered and systematic forms of communication, which stand in contrast to the sensuality required to understand them. Noa exposes the limitations of the media in which her work is made, as she explores the unfulfilled sense of longing and the anomalies in human experience.

Newsha Tavakolian

05.06.2014 - 01.08.2014

Tavakolian started her career as a self-taught photojournalist at the age of 16, and has covered wars and natural disasters, and produced photo documentaries in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Pakistan and Yemen. One of few female photographers in this context, she gained international success with work published in magazines and newspapers such as Time, Newsweek, Stern, Le Figaro, New York Times, Der Spiegel, Le Monde and National Geographic. Over the past few years, while the conditions for her photojournalistic work in Iran became increasingly difficult, she developed several art projects – still maintaining a largely documentary style – focusing particularly on women's issues, through projects such as Mother of Martyrs (2006) and The Day I Became a Woman (2010).
Look, Tavakolian's most recent series, consists of staged large-scale photographs in which lone subjects are framed against a window view of high-rise buildings. All shot at the same evening hour, the images are permeated with a cold bluish note, giving them a richly cinematic quality.

Julia Geiser

05.06.2014 - 01.08.2014

Yara El-Sherbini
Steps leading to The Current Situation

05.04.2014 - 27.06.2014

19.09.2013 - 15.01.2014

La Caja Blanca is pleased to present Julia Geiser's first solo show in Spain. Geiser's works grow out of found images that "wash ashore" onto her personal digital micro world, or filter bubble.

Geiser re-contextualises these images by slitting and slicing them like a horticultural botanist pruning off a shoot from one specimen and grafting it onto another.
In thus doing, she creates, new microcosms, with their intimate narratives.

"Family portraits: childhood, coming of age and the veiled secrets of conjugal life"

27.06.2013 - 15.09.2013

Artists: Amitis Motevalli, Abbas Kowsari, Samira Eskandarfar

The exhibition presents projects by three artists who use humour to explore the collusion between the camera's lens, cultural identity and collective memory. The collection of photographs and a video installation engage the viewers to explore the mechanisms involved in engineering social perceptions.

Each artist appropriates a familiar genre - the family album, the photo documentary, and video diaries / teen films - to weave a narrative which parodies western conspiracy theories and stereotypes of The Mysterious Middle East.

Yara El-Sherbini
(UK, 1978)

Born in the UK, to parents of Egyptian and Caribbean descent. She is currently based in London and Amsterdam. Her practice straddles a variety of artistic disciplines ranging from live participatory performances, to large-scale installations and sculptures, which are inspired by traditional game-playing and the rules of popular social interactions. Humour is a leitmotif, which she uses to challenge "politically incorrect" subjects, and compel audiences explore the invisible processes which shape individuals beliefs and behaviour in society at large. El-Sherbini's work not only challenges social apathy and conformism, it takes a starkly defiant position with regards to traditional art world market-driven systems; which explains why her work is supported by some of the most reputed institutions despite appearing very rarely in the commercial art gallery scene. This show brings together three projects developed as a direct response to the cultural, geographic and political contexts she encountered with during her participation in curated residency programs in the UK (Victoria & Albert Museum, Hayward Gallery), and Germany (ZKM).

Nit de l'Art 2012
Private view: Thursday 20th September 2012
Address: La Caja Blanca, Calle Can Verí 9, Palma de Mallorca 07001

La Caja Blanca is pleased to present Alyssa Pheobus Mumtaz's first solo exhibition in Spain. An American artist currently based in Charlottesville, Virginia, Pheobus Mumtaz is best known for monumental drawings that link archaic architectural forms to a hieroglyphic language of abstraction.

Created in the context of La Caja Blanca's Artist Residency Program in Mallorca, the works assembled in the exhibition reflect the artist's expansion into new drawing strategies that incorporate collage, graphite rubbings and ikat weaving. Like her abstract works on paper, these new projects display a sensitive engagement with materials that echoes her deep reverence for traditional and devotional craft practices.

With special thanks to: Teixits Bujosa, Monasterio de la Purísima Concepción (Palma de Mallorca, Spain). Tracy Williams, Tracy Williams Ltd. (New York).

Katie Paterson: "Earth-Moon-Earth"
18.02.2011 from 19:00 to 21:00 hrs
Presented in: Presidential Suite, Hotel Grán Melià Fénix, Madrid

Sound installation by Katie Paterson (UK, 1981)

Presented to the public in one of Madrid’s most unique rooftop locations, with panoramic views across the city, coinciding with the full moon.

For this work, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata has been translated into Morse code and sent to the moon via E.M.E. Returning to earth ‘fragmented’ by the moon’s surface, it has been re-translated into a new score, the gaps and absences becoming intervals and rests. In the exhibition space the new "moon–altered' score plays on a Disklavier grand piano.

Regina José Galindo: "ALARMA"
17.02.2011 - 20.02.2011

Presented in: Banco de España Station, Madrid

This Site – specific video installation by Regina José Galindo, was commissioned by La Caja Blanca gallery for the tunnels adjacent to the vaults which protect Spain’s national gold reserves. Whilst on the streets of Madrid, the growing sense of social unease becomes palpable, a crisis is strangling the economy, breaking down the borders that once preserved the privileged life of a carefree European city.
With breathtaking speed and the unmistakable sound of a siren, the streets of Madrid merge with those of Guatemala City.
