Today, art
enthusiasts can visit approximately over 30 independent art
galleries in Palma alone. The capital is said to have more
galleries per capita than any European city. Shows and
expositions are being organised for up and coming artists almost
on a weekly basis.
This great energy and
activity coupled with the fact that Palma is only two hours
flying time from most major European cities is attracting
international art investors to the city, which is further
fuelled by its growing international residential population.
On September 21st all
the art galleries in Palma open their doors to the public for an
"Art Open Night" when the city's art institutions, galleries and
artists gather.
Several days are
required to get around all the galleries in Palma alone,
herewith a few examples; ABA Contemporary Art (www.abaart.com),
La Caja Blanca (www.lacajablanca.com),
The joanna Kunstmann Galleries (www.kunstmann.com),
Pelaires (www.pelaires.com),
Altair (www.altair.com)
and Horrach Moyá (www.horrachmoya.com).
In Palma art is
everywhere and the visitor can see excellent examples in the
city's streets and plazas such as Plaza de la Reina, Jaime III (main
shopping street), Las Ramblas, el Parc de la Mar.
Palma's stunning
Cathedral La Seu, features works of Gaudi and the
internationally renowned local artist Miquel Barceló, who has
completed a vast (300 metres sq) ceramic mural for St Peter's
Chapel depicting the miracle of the loaves and fishes. Barcelo
is currently working on five stained glass windows for the
cathedral - all 12 metres high - which are scheduled to be
completed by the end of the year.
