Bárbara Juan [Palma de Mallorca, 1965]

One of the most exciting young talents to have emerged from the Balearics in the last two decades. She first became known thanks to her iconic pillow-like canvases which carried images and texts illustrating the increasing "spanglinisation" being experienced by the new generation of Mallorquins who were born into a tourism-ridden island.

During the 1980's and 1990's, Bárbara worked closely with the now mythical gallerist and art dealer Ferrán Cano, with whom she showed internationally at some of the world's best art fairs, including ARCO and Art Chicago. While collectors looking for the most cutting edge manifestations of the Spanish emerging art scene, travelling to Mallorca on order to visit her workshop.

After three years of intense and mostly solitary work from her atelier in Palma, with sporadic stays at Teresa Raux's atelier in Paris, the young artist has broken away from her playful pieces unveiling something much more raw and haunting

No longer passing judgement and social commentary on her contemporaries, Barbara's latest body of work unveils conceptually sophisticated and deeply introspective insight into her own inner world.

During eight weeks, the LCB Gallery will show a sample of Barbara Juan's latest sculptures and installations, where the artist engages her audiences' five senses using traditional materials such as ceramic, reclaimed timber and plaster.
